How to Set Goals the Right Way

Updated: Mar 25, 2021

In this world where achievements matter a lot, it is not unusual for us to set lofty goals for ourselves. We want to do more, gain more, and achieve more with the 24 hours that we have in a day. You may have even experienced guilt for simply missing out on your daily goals or for relaxing. With that said, chasing after our goals will always come at a price.

Now, we are not saying that you shouldn’t set goals or chase after them. Goals are great because they help you keep track of what you want to achieve and when exactly do you want them. This helps us systematize our lives and allows us to set our priorities straight.

However, as we have said, chasing after goals always comes at a price whether it’s labor or your free time, we will always trade something in order to achieve it. Hence, this is why many people experience burning out due to the exhaustion of chasing after their goals. The goals themselves are not the problem, but the main concern is how they chase after them.

Thus, having a solid goal is not enough especially when they are business goals because not only is your personal welfare on the line, but also your clients’ interests and your team’s livelihood.

It is important to know how we are going to chase after our goals while balancing them with our lifestyle and self-care in order to avoid burning out. When you have too much on your plate, it becomes harder and harder to focus and do each one properly. Hence, here are some ways that you can balance your business goals to strategically achieve them:

Check your time and resources

Do you have enough capacity to execute and achieve your goals? If not, then the important is to do is to ask yourself how you are going to acquire those much-needed resources. When you do acquire the time and resources that you need, see how you can make use of them more efficiently. The last thing that you need is having to buy or get those resources once again and as for the time, we all know that we can never get lost time back.

This is why having an in-depth look at yourself and your business’ status is vital before we start to work on any sort of goals. Too often we make the mistake of chasing after goals we are not ready for yet. We must make sure that everything is set to ensure that you will achieve your goal.

If you think that you are not ready yet for that business goal, then it might be better to set it aside for now as you wouldn’t want to waste your company’s resources and energy.

Check which one is the most beneficial

When you take a look at your goals, you should also try to see which ones are going to benefit you the most. For example, if opening up a new branch is going to benefit you more than introducing a new product, then it is reasonable for you to prioritize the former rather than the latter. You also do not have to let them go or forget about them completely. Simply know that you are free to prioritize one goal over the other. In this way, you are able to budget the time and resources you allocate to each goal.

Remember that not all goals are created equal. Some will give you better benefits than others. When you see that a goal is not viable anymore or would not really benefit you in the long run, then feel free to let it go. You should allocate your time energy and resources towards the goals that will bring you the most benefit.

Weed out unnecessary goals

As mentioned before, not all goals are created equal. Some may even be detrimental to you in the long run. Learn how to recognize them and know when to let them go. Remember that you would not want to waste precious resources and energy towards pursuing a dead goal.

When you have a list of goals that would benefit you and your organization with the right allocated time and resources, all you would need to do is to put them into motion. Like what we have said previously, by this point you are now able to prioritize the goals that you want to achieve the most.

Many experts actually recommend focusing on one goal at a time as giving your all into one task makes you more likely to finish it with high quality rather than doing ten tasks at a time and finishing with sloppy work.

By weeding out some goals, you’re able to make the most productive goals a priority. You can then devote your complete attention to achieving that goal. Most goal-setting experts recommend focusing on one goal at a time. You create a pattern of success by systematically achieving your goals. In business, this isn’t always possible. But you can devote your attention to the goals that matter right now.

Whether you are a business owner or a Virtual Assistant, we know that it can be hard to pursue your goal, especially during this pandemic. Many of us feel overwhelmed by all the things that are happening around us and some take more time to adjust than others. However, do not fret as this is completely normal. Not achieving your goals during this situation with a global pandemic will not make you less of a person. Hence, with all the things written in this article, you will surely be able to get back on track and achieve all of your goals!
